"I suppose it doesn't matter, just as long as we keep existing, right?" she smiled.

He looked at her curiously. "Exactly."

"Huh," Alice said, smiling, "I guess I'm deeper than I thought, though I wouldn't remember."

"Smarter than the twins anyway," he remarked but smiled apologetically right after. He didn't want to anger her.

"You know, they aren't so bad. Aiden seems like a sweetheart while Ethan seems to be the jerk." Alice said, looking over at him, "I bet if you guys got to know each other, you'd get along."

He rolled his shoulders uncomfortably and reached back to scratch his shoulder blade. "They don't understand," he stated simply.

"And I don't think you understand them either." Alice said, "To have a close relationship like they do."

"No, I don't," he said, "and I don't need one." It was a lie he had been telling himself all his life. Caring made you weak. Caring got you hurt. No one cared about him, and he decided the same for everyone else.

(OK, I'm off. Night!)

"I don't believe that, we all need a relationship like that with someone." She said, and as she said it, something tugged at her heart, a forgotten memory. It caused her to stop in her tracks.

Kit stopped and looked back at her. He raised an eyebrow. "What's wrong?" His eyes flicked over her face. "You're remembering something."

"Faintly." she said, shaking her head, trying to clear her thoughts, "Just . . a feeling. I don't know." she sighed, "Let's just keep going."

He nodded once and turned down another street. "They stay in the building at the end of this street."

"Do you think we'll be welcomed or .. ?" Alice asked, holding on tighter to her bat.

"Depends who's leading."

"Have any idea on who that could be?" Alice asked, "Since you do know this group . . right?"

"Either Blair or Hakkam. I'm hoping for Hakkam."

"What's wrong with Blair?" Alice asked curiously.

"She has no morals." He knocked on the door. The slat scraped open and a pair of black, yellow and red-rimmed eyes appeared.
"Kit?" the owner asked. His voice was deep, rumbly, and of obvious African descent. "What are you doing here?"
"On a mission. Can we come in?"
"Yes, of course." He unlocked the door and let the two of them inside.

Alice stayed close to Kit, looking around curiously and carefully.

Kit followed Hakkam in. He was almost impossible to see in the gloom of the room. His skin was the darkest shade of black. He was taller than Kit, broad, and muscled.
"Blair's not around anymore," Hakkam assured before Kit could ask. "We kicked her out after she tried to get an angel to steal my soul."
"Sounds like her."
"So, who're you, girl?" he asked - not unkindly.

"Alice." she spoke up, in a shy voice. She hesitated before asking, "Why would this girl Blair do something like that? I thought angels were your enemies."

"Pleasure to meet you, Alice. If I'm out of the way, she can take over," he said with a shrug. "Guys, look who decided to drop by."
"Dear God. The last face on earth I would rather see," Stephanie - the second in charge - muttered from the back corner. "What're you doing back here, Kitty?"
"Steph, sit down and don't speak again," Hakkam snapped. She obeyed immediately. "What are you doing here, Kit?"
"Sam needs more people. We were attacked by Reapers and Angels, and they wiped out quite a few of us."
"How many do you need?"
"All of you."
Hakkam nodded once. "Alright."
"Seriously, Hakkam? We've done fine on our own this far!" Stephanie protested.
"But conditions are getting worse. We'll need help too before long."

Alice blinked at the man before looking away, her arms crossed. Her eyes wandered the room nervously.

(She's a bitch.)

"When does Sam need us there?"
"As soon as possible."
"We'll be there in a few hours."
"Feel free to leave Stephanie behind," Kit said cooly.
Stephanie scowled but said nothing.
"Easy," Hakkam murmured. "We'll meet ya there."
He nodded once. "Come on, Alice."

Alice nodded, awkwardly bowing her head to the others before following Kit out, "They seem like a lovely group." she grumbled.
