Dawn took her flashlight and laughed softly, "Someone's excited." she teased.

"Oh, you have no idea." He grinned broadly and gestured ahead. "Lead the way, girls."
Blake and Trina ran down the hall, leaving Avan to jog to keep up.

Dawn followed after him, "Now I'm all curious." she smiled slightly, "I wonder what kind of secrets are here."

"I wonder how old the secrets will be," Avan said eagerly. Despite his excitement, he was nervous about what this might uncover about his family.
Blake and Trina stopped in front of a massive portrait of the founder of their family, Vincent Adler. Trina searched the wall and found a loose piece of wood. She wormed it out and pushed the button underneath. The painting slid upwards, revealing an archway carved out of the stone behind.

"Woah," Dawn breathed, "This is so cool." she grinned.

"I know!" Blake squealed happily, turning on her flashlight.
Avan did the same and took Trina's hand out of precaution. "Blake, hold onto Dawn. I don't know how worn these stairs might be." He started down with Trina, stepping carefully.

"Ooh," Dawn smirked, "An adventure with danger? This is proving to be quite fantastic."

"There's a good 60% chance that there'll be traps set up as well," Avan said over his shoulder.
Blake kept a firm grip on Dawn's hand. She bounced alongside. "I hope there's a dead body. That would be cool!"
"Gross, Blake!" Trina exclaimed. "I hope there's piles of really secret papers about the family. I bet our ancestors were awesome."
"Of course they were! How else do you explain the awesomeness that is us?" He swept the flashlight around. They were about halfway down from what he could tell. "We're probably, like, wizards or something. Or royalty. I've always thought I looked like a prince."
Blake snorted. "Prince of the Losers! OH!"

Dawn laughed, "I can see that, you do seem like you'd be a prince of losers." she teased lightly, walking alongside Blake, holding onto her hand.

"See, at least someone agrees with me!" Blake said, laughing.
"You two are long lost sisters, I'm sure," Avan chuckled. They reached the bottom. He shoved aside two, dust-covered crates. It smelled of old paper, sulfur, salt, smoke, and blood. "What happened here?" he muttered, sweeping the light across the room. One wall was loaded with boxes of documents. Elaborate chalk drawings of pentagrams dotted the concrete floor. Old, half-melted candles surrounded the drawings. Bowls of various liquids and powders rested alongside.
"Avan?" Trina asked in a small voice. "What is all this?"
"Nothing good."

Dawn walked forward, letting go of Dawn's hand as she looked at the various objects in front of them, "Woah," she murmured, "This is . . . different."

"Very." Avan headed for the shelves. He stuck the flashlight in his mouth, shining them on the documents. He set the box down and rifled through them. "These are ancient. This one's from the 1800's." He paled, seeing something that was worse than he could've possibly imagined. He folded it up and stuck it in his jean pocket. "Oh, my family. Always full of mysteries." He wandered to a far wall. Newspaper clippings, handwritten notes and remarks, and entries from a book on demons were tacked to the wall. Some were about his relatives' murders. "Whoever is doing all this down here wants revenge on whoever killed my relatives. He wants it desperately."

Dawn looked, confused, "Are they going into supernatural ways to do so?" she frowned.

"Yes, they are." He tore an entry off the wall. "Apparently, he's trying to summon a demon that can find the killer since the humans aren't doing a very good job. But, no demon would be willing to do a job that small without a huge reward." He scanned the walls. "But there's something else. Something bigger going on. Something to do with the train."

"It all has to be connected," she nodded, "Who do you think would be doing this in your family?" she asked, frowning.

"I have several people in mind, but most of them are overseas right now. This stuff all looks recent."
"Avan," Trina called from across the room. "This has your name on it."
He knelt down next to her, looking at the paper over her shoulder. It was a list of possible murderers within the family. It had a list of reasons saying how the murderer had to be a family member. One of them was Avan.
"This says you might've killed them. You didn't, did you?" she asked timidly.
Avan paused, looking over the names. "No, of course not," he lied though it killed him inside. "Do I look like a killer to you?"
She shook her head, smiling a little. "No."

Dawn looked at Avan carefully but didn't say anything, "Should we tell anyone about this?" she asked

"We'll talk to my grandfather. He might have some answers for us. Just leave everything as it is for now. I'd like to go through those other documents, dig up whatever else they're hiding down here." He took Trina's hand. "Let's go."
Blake just stood there, staring at everything and completely silent. Avan frowned and knelt down in front of her. "Come on. You don't need to look at this anymore." He picked her up, carrying her against his chest.

Dawn followed them up the stairs. She turned to look at the room one more time, what the hell is going on? she sighed and followed them up.

Blake buried her face in Avan's neck. "I wish we never went down."
"I know, darling," he murmured, resting his head against hers. Blake had always been sensitive towards the supernatural side of their family. She hated everything to do with it. It scared her. But, during everything else - the funerals, the investigations, everything - she had been so strong. Trina was the opposite. The supernatural fascinated her. She loved learning about the creatures and the monsters, but death silenced her.

Dawn looked at Blake sadly. No child should have had to seen that. She stayed silent herself, her mind wandering as she walked.

Avan set Blake down in the library and knelt down in front of her. "I'm so sorry you had to see that," he whispered, holding her hands. "You know I'll protect you, right? Nothing will ever happen to you while I'm around."
She smiled faintly. "I know."
"Good." He kissed her forehead. "Because you know I love you more than I love myself." Avan watched her face. He wiped the tears from her eyes. "Will you be alright?"
"Can I sleep with you tonight? I don't want nightmares," she murmured, looking down at the ground.
"Of course, darling. We'll watch a movie before you go to sleep. Go choose something while I talk to granddad, alright?"
She perked up a little. "OK." She kissed his cheek and headed upstairs with Trina.
Avan got to his feet, running both hands through his hair. He turned to Dawn. "You must be very confused right now."

"Just a bit," Dawn said, her arms crossed, "but I figure you'll tell me what's going on when you're ready."

He nodded. "I'll tell you. Just," he sighed, "not right now. I don't think I'm ready for you to hate me yet. After we figure out what went on down there, I'll tell you." He paused. "He'll be in his study." He shoved his hands in his pockets, leading the way up to the second floor of the library.

Dawn raised an eyebrow, watching him pass, "Who said I'd hate you?" she muttered before following after him, but kept a distance.
