Dawn laughed, "Alright, alright, I'm coming." she said, following her to the middle of the garden. She glanced around at the roses, captivated by their beauty.

Avan followed a few steps behind with Trina. He plucked a rose, ripped off the thorns and tucked it behind Trina's ear.
She giggled. "Thank you."
He smiled and kissed the top of her head.
They found Blake crouched down next to the pond, wiggling her fingers at the ducklings. They quacked and paddled over. They nibbled on her fingers, making Blake giggle endlessly.

Dawn knelt down next to Blake, "They're adorable, do you come visit them a lot?" she asked Blake with a friendly smile.

"Mm-hmm. Every day. I'm trying to teach them to follow me."

"That must be difficult," Dawn smiled, a bit amused, "has it worked at all so far?"

"Only one obeys. The little brown-headed one. I call him Merlin, you know, like the wizard. He follows me, but I think it's just because he wants bread."

Dawn laughed again, though it was soft, "Well, hey that's a star, I bet one down they all follow you." she grinned.

"I hope so! I can be their mother!"
"They know you're not their mother. You're obviously not a duck," Trina said, scoffing.
Avan ruffled her hair. "Don't ruin her dreams."

Dawn giggled, "Maybe not their mother, but a friend of them." she suggested.

Drake walked around the school and released an obnoxious sigh, "I want to meet this new kids." he muttered. He spent the whole day looking around for them with no luck.

"I can be a friend."
"DINNER!" Avan's mother's voice rang out from the back door.
"Come on, let's eat. I'm starving," Avan said, taking Trina's hand.

"Good," Dawn said and ruffled Blake's hair playfully before getting to her feet. She was a bit nervous to meet Avan's parents, but forced herself to move forward.

Trina and Avan walked alongside Dawn and Blake.
"I hope she made something good," Blake said. "Not that nasty vegetable pie like last night." She crinkled her nose.
"I think it was some kind of pasta tonight," Trina said thoughtfully.
"Oh good."
"Vegetable pie?" Avan asked, already deciding he didn't like it.
"It was chicken pot pie without the chicken. It was disgusting!"

Dawn laughed softly as she walked beside them. She was starting to think Avan was over exaggerating about his family, so far she liked everyone she had met.

Avan held the door open for all of them.
"We have a special guest. Your Uncle Alec is here," his mother said, kissing the top of Avan's head.
"Aw, Mom, can - never mind."
She laughed and ruffled his hair.
"Mom, this is Dawn. Dawn, this is my mum."
"Lovely to meet you, dearie," she said, hugging Dawn briefly. "Come sit down."
Avan glanced at his uncle and father. They sat at the head of the table, talking quietly. He narrowed his eyes suspiciously. He took his seat and poured himself a glass of water from the pitcher on the table.

"It's nice to meet you to," Dawn smiled, "Thank you for letting me stay here." she said, bowing her head slightly before taking a seat next to Avan.

Uncle Alec turned to Avan. "Well, I hear you managed to pass your Test." With anyone else, it might've been teasing, but not with him.
"I did. Only had a couple scrapes."
"You know, when your father and I did our Tests, we weren't even harmed. What monster did you get?"
"A vampire."
"I got a werewolf. Everyone knows that they're far more terrifying and dangerous than vampires."
"Naturally. Uncle, this is Dawn Alder."
"Ah, Alder. I knew your mother. Bright woman."

Dawn got a bad vibe off of Alec, but replied, "She is," with a sad smile. She was still unable to find her mother, Luna, after all these years. She just prayed that she was okay.

"I understand that she's . . . missing. Dead sounds so final, doesn't it? Missing sounds much more hopeful. False hope, maybe, but hope nonetheless."
"Uncle," Avan said coldly. "Enough."
"Oh," he said, raising his eyebrows. "Don't you feel important now that you've passed your Test?"
Avan narrowed his eyes but made no comment. He wouldn't give Alec that pleasure. I should've killed him, too.

Dawn looked at him, a pick shocked but hid it from her eyes, "She's fine. She's a bright woman after all, like you said, she can handle herself where ever she is."

"Oh, I'm sure she can," he said patronizingly. It was obvious he didn't believe it.
Finally, Avan's grandfather settled down at the table, starting dinner.
"Bread, Dawn?" Granddad asked, offering her the basket.
"Spencer called from London. He's managed to neutralize the werewolf threat in Whitechapel. Killed all of them," Avan's father stated, stabbing a noodle with is fork.
"I thought the head werewolf was taking care of it," Avan said.
"He's no longer in the picture."
"Spencer kill him, too? He's never been able to control himself very well."
His father only glared pointedly.
"You know it's true."

Dawn narrowed her eyes at the man but said nothing. She looked over at Granddad and smiled with a nod, "Sure, thank you." she said, taking a slice and started to nibble on it as she listened to the conversation around the table.

"Sebastian was unfit for the position," Alec said. "So he was removed."
Avan sighed, too exhausted to argue. He made a point to look away and towards his grandfather. "So, when's your next trip to London?"
"Two weeks. Think you'll be able to sneak away this time?"
He grinned. "I can try."
Blake leaned down slightly against Dawn's arm. Vegetables were cupped in her palm. Little feet trotted over from under the table and started nibbling at the vegetables.

Dawn looked curiously at Blake, "What are you feeding?" she asked quietly, amusement clear in her eyes.

"Shh," she hushed, giggling. "My puppy, Hermoine. She needs her vegetables more than I do."

Dawn laughed quietly and nodded, "I understand," she winked, "I won't tell anyone." she vowed, nodding her head.
